Interpretations of genre through Mise-en-Scene

In this task we were asked in groups to label sheets that had stills taken from a variety of music videos on them, for each still we were asked to write about the clothing the artist was wearing and what it connotes, how old we though the artist was, any props that we could see, as wells as any other semiotics we could identify.

In this still we can see Dizzy Rascal, the still shows Dizzy Rascal sat in what could be considered a holiday destination surrounded by women who are all focused on him. This connotes that the women are attracted to him and want his attention or affection. The still also shows that he is incredibly independent and able to fund lavish trips and a luxury lifestyle.

The next still we were asked to label was taken from Rihanna's music video for S&M, it shows the star taped to a wall in front of a group of older men, this connotes that Rihanna is powerless but still the main attraction of the scene with all of the men's eyes focused on her. We can see this due to the fact that she is wearing a extravagant dress with the light focused on her, in comparison to the men who are wearing dark colours and who are not lit, leaving them unidentifiable.
For this still, we used One Direction and labeled it. They are seen as having the perfect life with no troubles. They are throwing stones and having a laugh on the beach suggesting the don't have a care in the world. There is a hippie van which connotes the surfer life, which suggests they are cool and have their independence. There clothes suggest they can relate to teenagers and they are living the dream. They are in the middle of no were and in solitude. This suggests they are a solo band and they don't need any help and have got their success on there own.

The next still was George Shelly from Union J. This is the idea of a new man who is very emotional and care about his looks. He is also seen as very young as he is in his bedroom suggesting he relies on his parents. He is in the middle of the shot to put emphasis on him and is shown in a very weak pose to show vunerablility.
